Breaking down our process
Humans have long known that forests are the heart of a healthy, thriving planet, and our best defense against global warming. They store large amounts of carbon in the trunks of their trees and their roots in the soil. A valuable part of our ecosystem, they ensure we have clean air to breathe.
At Lenzing, forests are at the center of everything we do because our fiber journey begins with wood — the natural and renewable raw material at the heart of our products. We take care to source our wood from responsibly managed forests across Europe and the USA, and plantations in Brazil and South Africa and we only work with suppliers who meet the highest standards of international forest-protection certifications or fulfil the Controlled Wood criteria recognised by the FSC® Forest Stewardship Council® or PEFC or Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification standards.
For responsible sourcing practices that help protect ancient and endangered forests, Lenzing has been recognized as one of the best-performing companies worldwide. Our commitment has earned us the highest Dark Green Shirt ranking in Canopy’s Hot Button Report since 2019.
So how do we go from wood, to fibre, to fabric? Well, cellulose is the essential building block of wood, and this is our magic ingredient. Cellulose is created as plants grow. It is abundant in trees like spruce, beech, maple, southern pine, birch and acacia. TENCEL™ Lyocell fibers are made from wood pulp using a resource-efficient, closed-loop system to safely recover and reuse the solvent* and water. We send our fibers all over the world to our talented textile partners, who transform and weave them into fabrics for high fashion, home, industrial use, and everyday goods.
