feel good about a future
that's true carbon zero

By reducing carbon emissions and using renewable energy during production, TENCEL™ goes beyond carbon offsetting to lower its carbon footprint, offering TENCEL™ fibers certified as carbon neutral.

committed to

certified as

Starting with our commitment to the Science Based Targets initiative, our steps support actions against global warming in line with UN Sustainable Development Goals.

TENCEL™ is on a journey to True Carbon Zero, contributing to a carbon neutral textile industry. With a vision to have net-zero emissions by 2050, our three-step plan is already in action: reduce, engage and offset. The resulting carbon-zero TENCEL™ Lyocell and Modal fibers are certified as carbon neutral.

reduce

Our priority is the continuous reduction of carbon emissions through more efficient production methods, using renewable energy sources and embracing new technologies.

engage

Being the first cellulosic fiber producer to commit to the Science Based Targets initiative, we engage and steer our industry to source materials with low carbon footprints and reduce overall carbon emissions.

offset

We offset unavoidable carbon emissions by supporting verified global carbon reduction projects.

certified by global standards of sustainability

reduce

We have our sights set on net-zero emissions by 2050, so we prioritize the continuous reduction of carbon emissions through efficient production, new technologies and renewable energy sources to meet targets set through the Science Based Targets initiative. The resulting carbon-zero TENCEL™ fibers:

are certified to reduce climate impact by various global standards of sustainability.

*Reduction of specific CO₂ emissions for products sold (pulp and fiber) by 50% until 2030 compared to baseline 2017.

engage

As the first cellulosic fiber producer committed to the Science Based Targets initiative, we are leaders steering our industry to change by normalizing data transparency and working exclusively with brands that echo our values – implementing carbon neutral practices from cradle to cradle. Our pioneering partnership with TextileGenesis™ ensures digital traceability of TENCEL™ fibers and unmatched transparency from fiber to finished garment.

offset

While continuously reducing carbon emissions across the lifecycle of our TENCEL™ fibers, we take responsibility for any residual emissions by supporting verified carbon reduction projects. These global carbon reduction projects are an immediate response to ensure that an equivalent amount of carbon is absorbed or avoided elsewhere.

TENCEL™ is supporting verified carbon offset projects specifically in communities impacted by the textile industry. These projects are focused on helping ill-prepared communities become more climate-resilient and on introducing new sources of renewable energy, including:

Wind Energy, Satara, India

Wind energy has become one of the most important renewable energy sources for power generation in India. The project not only contributes to energy security and climate action, providing a considerable amount of electricity that would otherwise have been produced using fossil fuels, but also promotes economic and regional development and job creation.

Wind Energy, Gujarat, India

The project replaces greenhouse gas emissions by displacing the equivalent amount of electricity generated mainly by fossil fuel based power plants with wind turbine generators. The wind farm contributes to reducing the energy demand supply gap within the state, and stimulates a sustainable economic growth in the region by providing clean electricity to the state grid.

Biogas, Punjab, India

Using gas from fermented biomass for cooking saves significant amounts of CO2 per year that would otherwise be emitted when cooking with wood or charcoal. The project has installed biogas plants of various sizes with a direct outlet to households, which also significantly reduces indoor air pollution that is harmful to health.

key benefits of carbon-zero TENCEL™ fibers

Within the context of True Carbon Zero, we extend our fiber portfolio to new levels of sustainability with carbon-zero TENCEL™ fibers. We focus on three advantages where these fibers have the greatest distinction.

carbon neutral

Carbon-zero TENCEL™ Lyocell and Modal fibers contribute to reducing carbon emissions.

Acting on Lenzing’s commitment to the Science Based Targets initiative* and supporting the UN Sustainable Development Goals**, carbon-zero TENCEL™ Lyocell and Modal fibers are third party certified as carbon neutral by means of carbon emission reduction and respective compensation measures***. These fibers contribute to protecting the environment and reducing climate change, as they are developed according to three environmental pillars:

  • lower carbon emission levels from production to reduce carbon footprint,
  • increased use of renewable energy sources at Lenzing production sites, and
  • support of verified global carbon reduction projects to compensate for fiber-related emissions that are not yet avoidable.

engaging suppliers

Through its carbon-zero TENCEL™ Modal fibers, Lenzing contributes to the reduction of the carbon footprint of the supply chain by engaging with value chain partners of relevant raw materials, and making Lenzing’s target of carbon neutrality a collaborative mission.

Science Based Targets commitment

The Lenzing Group has committed to the Science Based Targets initiative* by setting goals to reduce 50% of specific carbon emissions by 2030**. The vision is to become net zero by 2050. Lenzing’s TENCEL™ brand will attain these targets by further reducing its own operational emissions. Supplier emissions and remaining unavoidable emissions are offset through respective compensation measures, enabling TENCEL™ to offer cellulosic fibers that are third party certified as carbon neutral***. This helps the textile industry to take action to limit climate impact and tackle global warming.

**calculated based on the emissions by the Lenzing Group as a whole, using 2017 as the baseline.
