Until we reduce carbon emissions across our full footprint, we take responsibility for carbon emissions that are not yet avoidable through verified climate protection projects. These global carbon compensation projects are an immediate response to ensure that an equivalent amount of carbon is absorbed or avoided elsewhere.

TENCEL™ is supporting verified climate protection projects specifically in communities impacted by the textile industry. These projects are focused on helping ill-prepared communities become more climate-resilient and on introducing new sources of renewable energy, including:

Improved Cookstoves, Bangladesh

Over 90% of the population in Bangladesh relies on burning biomass for daily cooking needs, resulting in families being exposed to harmful indoor pollution. This project enhances locally made biomass stoves to increase fuel efficiency by up to 50%, lower CO2 emissions and reduce smoke by 80%.

Solar Water Heating, India

The primary focus of this project is to manufacture, distribute, install and maintain in-house hot water supply fueled by renewable energy rather than carbon intensive grid electricity through solar water heaters (SWH) in households, small and mediums-sized enterprises (SMEs) and institutions.

Kamphaeng Saen Landfill Gas to Energy, Thailand

This project utilises landfill gas to generate renewable electricity and avoid the release of potent greenhouse gases. This is the first project of its kind in Thailand, providing a step toward managing waste and away from dependency on fossil fuel.

Acting on Lenzing’s commitment to the Science Based Targets initiative* and supporting the UN Sustainable Development Goals**, carbon-zero TENCEL™ Lyocell and Modal fibers are certified as CarbonNeutral® products according to The CarbonNeutral Protocol by Natural Capital Partners***. These fibers, which contribute to mitigate climate impact and protect the environment, are developed with three pillars:

  • lowering carbon emissions,
  • using renewable energy sources at Lenzing production sites, and
  • supporting verified global carbon reduction projects to compensate for fiber-related emissions that are not yet avoidable.

Through its carbon-zero TENCEL™ Modal fibers, Lenzing contributes to the reduction of the carbon footprint of the supply chain by engaging with suppliers of relevant raw materials, making Lenzing’s target of carbon neutrality collaborative.

Science Based Targets commitment

The Lenzing Group has committed to the Science Based Targets initiative* by setting goals to reduce 50% of specific carbon emissions by 2030. The vision is to become net zero by 2050. Lenzing’s TENCEL™ brand will attain these targets by offering cellulosic fibers certified as CarbonNeutral™ products according to The CarbonNeutral Protocol by Natural Capital Partners, taking action in the textile industry to limit climate impact and tackling global warming.
