Celebrating 30 years of forest-to-fabric innovation with TENCEL™

The forest has proven to be a powerful partner for the textile industry since the launch of Lenzing’s TENCEL™ brand 30 years ago. Adhering to stringent guidelines of sustainable forestry, the TENCEL™ brand has continued to explore the power of the forest, innovating the utilization of wood to create sustainable fibers that are good for people and the planet.

“Wood” you believe trees could be magical?

Europe has long had an affinity of loving forests, so it is no surprise that the TENCEL™ brand, headquartered in Austria, dedicated itself to exploring how forests can be utilized to create innovative textile fiber solutions for a sustainable future.

For the TENCEL™ brand, wood is not only seen as a raw material, but also a commitment to the planet. Wood used in the production of TENCEL™ branded fibers are certified according to recognized global forest management certification schemes. Lenzing also implements a stringent Wood & Pulp Policy that ensures efficiency, high selectivity standards and collaboration with responsible wood suppliers.

Given wood is not needed just for today, but also for tomorrow, the TENCEL™ brand only takes from nature the amount of wood that can grow back. The timber used in the production of TENCEL™ branded fibers, which is unsuitable for high-grade products, such as furniture, finds a meaningful purpose in the production of eco-fibers. Any residual material from the processing of the wood will be used to generate bioenergy, which powers Lenzing’s production plant in Austria.

“Wood” you believe how much the TENCEL™ brand has grown in 30 years?

What started with TENCEL™ Lyocell fibers for the US market in 1992 has grown into a broad portfolio of wood-based cellulosic offerings widely used by brands and designers globally. To date, TENCEL™ fibers feature various fiber types from the original TENCEL™ Lyocell fibers to TENCEL™ Lyocell fibers with REFIBRA™ technology, TENCEL™ Luxe Lyocell filament yarn, modal fibers, carbon zero fibers, and TENCEL™ Limited Edition, which reinvents TENCEL™ fibers using unconventional sustainable raw materials, such as orange pulp made from orange peel waste.

Over the last three decades, the brand has also pioneered innovations for the industry and its supply chain partners including Eco Color technology, Eco Filament technology, Eco Soft technology, and Eco Clean technology. TENCEL™ is also continuously looking for ways revolutionize industry practices, such as the Lenzing E-Branding Service, which facilitates the traceability of Lenzing’s sustainable fibers and enables customers to promote them effectively. Lenzing also collaborates with TextileGenesis™ which delivers blockchain-enabled supply chain traceability for TENCEL™ fibers.

While TENCEL™ is proud of what it has achieved so far, its work is far from done and it will continue to strive towards finding new ways to create a sustainable future with the goal of achieving a carbon neutral textile industry.
