ECO Textile AWARD 08 opts for TENCEL® fibers made from wood

09.09.2008

Designers at the ECO Textile AWARD 08 / Lenzing Botanic – Austria’s first eco-fashion design competition opted for TENCEL®, Lenzing’s lyocell fiber made from the renewable natural raw material wood. On September 5, Karin Maislinger won the first prize for her designer piece ”Brimstone Butterfly “ – convincing couture in eco-quality.

For the design competition, Lenzing provided fabrics made from TENCEL®, produced by Hämmerle and Huber Textil. The product and its production process meet high environmental standards and received the prestigious European Eco Flower Award.

The two curators, Lisa Niedermayr und Barbara Denk, were deliberately looking for alternative and Austrian-made fibers. Lisa Niedermayr, textile expert at the Academy of Visual Arts, Vienna notes: "Only two to five percent of the cotton produced world-wide is organic, by far too little to meet demand.“ And environmental consultant Michaela Knieli comments critically: "A quarter of global pesticide production goes into cotton production. Consumption of energy and water is immense, and the land resources tied up in cotton production are huge."

The main resource for the production of TENCEL® is eucalyptus. A comparison with classic cotton shows that water and pesticide consumption are rather uncritical production factors. Classic cotton requires up to twenty times more water than the total production process of TENCEL®, including pulp production.
