Lenzing AG: Award for Sustainable Management Strategy
07.05.2003
At the competition "Intelligent Applications of Renewable Raw Materials" (Factory of the Future),staged by the Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology, Lenzing AG was given due recognition for its sustainable management strategies, as reflected in the projects that it submitted. On Tuesday, 6 May 2003, Franz Raninger, Member of the Board of Management responsible for fibers, received the award in Vienna.
The jury of experts gave a positive judgment to the projects "Rainbow", a fiber with special dyeing properties, and "Lyocell", the youngest fiber of Lenzing AG, which was previously awarded the EU environmental prize in 2000.
Rainbow
Rainbow, the cellulose fiber, has special dyeing properties that make it possible to dye Polyester/Rainbow blends in a one-step dyeing process. This significantly saves dyeing time, which can be used to increase productivity. At the same time, the impact on the environment is reduced, thanks to considerable savings of water, waste water and energy, as well as a clearly reduced color content of the waste water, thanks to an almost complete extraction from the dye bath.
Lyocell
Like all fibers made by Lenzing AG, Lyocell fibers consist of cellulose, which is manufactured from wood - a natural raw material. The production of the fiber is environmentally friendly, and it is completely bio-degradable, ecological and economical in its further processing, as well as extremely versatile and adaptable to innovations regarding the surface finishing of textiles.
The manufacturing process for Lenzing Lyocell is based on the principle of direct solvent spinning. In contrast to common production processes, the cellulose does not need any prior chemical modification ("derivatization"), but it dissolves in a purely physical manner, just like sugar in water.
The manufacturing process is characterized by almost completely closed solvent and water cycles. This reduces emissions significantly.
Here a quotation from the jury comments: "The management of Lenzing AG has a strategic approach to renewable raw materials and sustainability. The award therefore acknowledges these efforts to proceed with a sustainable development of the company, as well as of wood processing."
The goal of the competition was to select, and present to the public, initiatives and products using renewable raw materials, as they contribute to the transition from an economy based on fossile raw materials to one that uses renewable substances. The competition's exclusive theme was the use of renewable raw materials.
From the many projects submitted, the jury selected nine which received an award at this event.
