Lenzing FR® protects U.S. soldiers

Permanent protection from heat

Lenzing FR® fibers offer lasting protection from sources of heat since they have perfect balance of heat insulation properties. The inherent flame resistance of the fiber cannot be removed by washing and scrubbing or abrasion.
Until now soldiers from the American army did not wear flame-resistant combat uniforms. Nylon and cotton were the main textile raw materials used. To offer better protection from explosive materials which can cause severe burns, the decision was made to change to flame-resistant uniforms. With its fiber properties, Lenzing FR® offers superior protection and at the same time, optimum comfort as a result of good breathing properties and its ability to transport moisture. In extreme climatic conditions in particular, these properties also help to prevent heat stress and heat stroke among soldiers in action.

Protective uniforms
The new improved battle suit based on Lenzing FR® comprises a jacket and trousers, a t-shirt and flame-resistant underwear as well as a protective cap. There is a particular need for textiles worn directly next to the skin to be skin-friendly and have good breathing properties. Lenzing FR® is soft yet durable and is of completely natural origin. Lenzing FR® is extracted from beech wood and has considerable potential to absorb and transport moisture.

Innovative fabric manufacturer
This revolutionary Lenzing FR® based fabric with a camouflage print is made by TenCate Southern Mills and marketed under the trade name of „Defender M“. Southern Mills is a market leader with regard to this technology for special camouflage printing and has protected this leading edge technology through various patents. When it comes to camouflage prints Lenzing FR® demonstrates its superiority once again. After all cellulosic fibers are better at absorbing dyestuffs. The camouflage prints are therefore longer-lasting and more intensive in color.

Worldwide interest
The new uniforms for the American army have created worldwide interest in Lenzing FR®. No matter what the army, flame protection for soldiers was never a matter of discussion. Only special units such as the air force, the marines or tank crews were previously equipped with flame-resistant uniforms.
The decision of the American army to protect all its active combat soldiers against heat, flame (and the resulting burn injuries), will serve as an example for other armies.
