Research into sleep: A healthy sleep with TENCEL®

11.01.2007

Together with the sleep research scientist, Univ.-Prof. Dr. Maximilian Moser, Lenzing examined the influence of TENCEL® bed wear on people asleep. Measurements were taken of factors affecting our health such as the heart beat rate of the sleeping people. The climate in their surroundings i.e. the room temperature and humidity level and other factors directly influencing the sleep cave - likewise the temperature and humidity. The examination of microclimatic parameters makes it possible to draw a conclusion about the subjective well-being and how the body will react to this. A 24 hour ECG specially developed for this purpose, “HeartMan“, recorded the heart frequency of 24 people. The test persons took turns sleeping for one week each in different types of bedding. In the test TENCEL® was compared with polyester and cotton. The goal of the test was to measure the influence of various types of materials and their effect on humans, which affects the general feeling of well-being.

TENCEL® demonstrates a dream-like sleep quality index
The vegetative sleep quality index in these tests is a value which stands for relaxation and recuperation during sleep. This objective value indicates in what time period during the night recuperative values with regard to the heart rate variability measurement were reached: the lower e.g. the heart frequency the more intensive the sleep and thus the recovery value this produces. The result of the test shows that the people sleeping in a TENCEL® bed have a better sleep. The sleep quality index of the test persons is 61 % much more higher than of polyester.

TENCEL® just gets better and better
A look at the week as a whole reveals an interesting result. After a period of adjustment of approximately 3 days one sleeps better with TENCEL® than at the beginning of the week. Compared to the other bedding materials, TENCEL® soars ahead in terms of the results. With polyester on the other hand the subjective feeling of well-being declines and in the standard bed it remains the same. In general the TENCEL® bed wear helps to prevent sweating, and it is perceived to be calmer and more relaxing, which leads to a better subjective quality of sleep compared to polyester.

TENCEL® leads to a better performance
The test persons reported that in comparison to polyester they did not feel exhausted so quickly with TENCEL® during the day. They were able to concentrate better and did not suffer from a lack of energy. Thus TENCEL® can promote the power of performance during the day and makes a considerable contribution to the general feeling of well-being.
